Anne Belson painting plein air

Method

I prefer to work onsite in a small format that enables me to focus on elements in the environment and complete most of the painting in a single sitting. Being excited about the subject matter is a prerequisite for beginning. I love the properties of watercolor, especially the way it slides over the surface of the hot press paper I use, and the way it leaves a record of the path the brush takes. My color choices and the kinds of marks I make depend upon the atmospheric conditions or my feelings about the subject. Some situations inspire thin, pastel colors; others call for rich, layered pigments. Marks might be linear or pointillistic, with the white of the paper an important factor, or they might merge and run, leaving little of the paper showing through. The completion process can take moments or hours, onsite or in the studio. It involves more thinking than painting, as I try to maximize each work's uniqueness.
